Jyväskylä region Centre of Expertise - An extraordinary business development environment

In Jyväskylä Region, the presence of the modern Finnish innovation system and the highly developed and efficient regional business development environment together with the world-class science practised in the research units form an extraordinary environment for new nanotechnology based business.

The Nanotechnology Cluster Programme forms a gateway to the Region. In addition to the work carried out with the regions global nanotechnology actors, the Programme develops new global networks and projects aiming to raise global nanotechnology business. This work generates international funding for the participants. The partners based in Finland can utilise the national funds also in these projects.

World-class expertise in nanoscience

The Nanoscience Center at the University of Jyväskylä was founded in 2000 to strengthen the research infrastructure, industrial co-operation and education. Biology, chemistry and physics researchers work together and operate shared research equipment in their common premises. The Center has a long history in designing, preparing and characterizing molecular based functional systems and devices. The interdisciplinary research groups have worked on different nanostructures, nanoparticles, carbon and hybrid nanotubes, supramolecules, biomolecules, DNA and other macromolecules with the most complete set of research equipment tools a modern research centre can offer. On the top of this, the strong theory and computation research actively collaborates with experimental research. One third of the Nanoscience Center's 14 professors and over 120 researchers are specialized in theoretical science.

Nanoscience Center has been very strong in basic research, but currently it also provides a solid foundation for companies with its needs-oriented research and technology transfer. The Centre ensures availability of the well qualified personnel and experts to technology companies. It has already established a long tradition in cooperating with major Finnish industrial players such as Nokia, Metso, Stora Enso, UPM-Kymmene and Kemira. Nanoscience Center forms the scientific foundations of Nano Forum Jyväskylä.

Research groups in the Nanoscience Center

Industrial Collaboration

Nanoscience Center is active in promoting industrial applications of nanotechnology together with companies, from small enterprises to industrial consortia. For spin-off companies NSC offers a platform for commercializing nanotechnology. Services include consultancy and tailored measurement services, as well as modern facilities for R&D, and office space. NSC is a key science partner in the national Nanotechnology Cluster Programme.

Global Nanotechnology Business Incubator

A global nanotechnology business incubator chain is under development in China, India, Russia, Finland and USA. Experienced incubators and nanotechnology developers will work with a common concept to ease the access of companies in different countries to the target market areas.

The incubators will share their competence in business development and their market know how and the research institutes will open their facilities to the incoming companies for common development projects.

Nano Forum Jyväskylä - A platform to build on

Nano Forum Jyväskylä is a meeting forum for the companies of all sizes, the universities, the research institutions and the developers offering their know-how, conducting common R&D projects, and commercializing new applications. Players in the Forum are Ecocat Ltd, Honeywell Ltd, Jykes Ltd, Jyväskylä Innovation Ltd, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences, Metso Paper Ltd, Moventas Ltd, M-Real Plc, Nanoscience Center (University of Jyväskylä), Nokia Plc, Nokia Research Center, Patria Aerostructures Ltd, Pöyry Plc, Regional Council of Central Finland, Succes Factory Ltd, University of Jyväskylä, UPM-Kymmene Plc.
